Renovation and extension of the former school building in Wejherowo with conversion into a restaurant and hotel facility. The project involved restoring the former school building, dating back to 1890, to its original form while preserving its authentic character. The main design principle behind the extension was based on juxtaposing the historic building with a contemporary single-storey structure. In shaping the new volume, the primary objective was to visually reduce the scale of the newly designed pavilion while simultaneously meeting the client’s requirements regarding the required floor area.

For the newly designed extension, we chose graphite-stained timber cladding arranged in a pergola-like pattern, characteristic of garden pavilions. The dark timber finish emphasizes the strong architectural expression of the volume and creates a clear contrast with the existing historic building. The façade detail was consistently repeated in the landscape elements and fencing, giving the entire development a cohesive and unified character. The timber-clad volume is intersected by two large glazed openings that frame views of the garden. These expansive glass surfaces blur the boundary between interior and exterior spaces, allowing the pavilion to visually and functionally extend onto the adjacent terraces.

The pavilion’s roof structure, designed using glued laminated timber technology, was intentionally exposed within the interior, giving a distinctive character to the large open-plan multifunctional hall. The historic building accommodates the hotel facilities and restaurant, while the newly designed pavilion houses a flexible open-plan event space intended for a wide range of functions and gatherings. The restaurant and hotel interiors were designed with respect for the building’s historic fabric, whereas the multifunctional hall within the new pavilion features a bright, open, and contemporary atmosphere.
